6th – 9th century:

The first inhabitants lived there before the founding of the monastery, because
on the hill Posa (Bosau) was a Slavic wall-castle from the 6th to the 10th century.
Later, around 970, it was a Ottonic castle. The hill Posa is situated on the
former area of the sorbic district “Puonzouua”.

This district, first mentioned in a charter of German emperor Otto II dated 1st August 976, is named after the hill “Bosau”.

At the base of the hill was the settlement “Podgrod” (=Podogrodiz), meaning “below the hill”. It is nowadays the area of the upper town of Zeitz, while the lower town was occupied by a sorbic village named “Zitici”. Later on, after the settlement “Podgrod” became the centre of the city and both villages united, the name “Bosau” disappeared and the city. From that time on the city is names “Zeitz”.
